People have not abandoned good old fashioned shopping therapy, browsing their Saturdays away, touching and feeling, or just window shopping, there is and always will be the kindling of romance associated with tradition, not quite the same as sitting in from of a computer screen.

So we can buy and sell and communicate via social media, ecommerce, or trudge the high street stores. But there is one more way of communicating and selling, no google, facebook, twitter online shopping, or trudging shop floors. It’s an age old form of communicating called networking, face to face. This is where you are totally exposed, no telephone, no computer screen, no secretary filtering calls, all the barriers are stripped away. There is just you and the rest of them, the playing field is levelled and you sit across the table from one another eye ball to eye ball. All of your fears about communicating, failing, public speaking are confronted, there is nowhere to hide, it’s an exhilarating experience, one that you will become addicted too and also rely on as a major channel for business development done the human way.

If you ever doubt the positive effects or longevity of networking then just think of the Commonwealth. This unique concept is in effect an international network that bonds more than fifty countries together and they just had a three day network event in Perth Western Australia.

A little history
After the end of the First World War, the Dominions began seeking a new constitutional definition and reshaping their relationship with Britain. At the Imperial Conference in 1926, the prime ministers of the participating countries adopted the Balfour Report which defined the Dominions as autonomous communities within the British Empire, equal in status, in no way subordinate to one another in any aspect of their domestic or external affairs, though united by common allegiance to the Crown, and freely associated as members of the British Commonwealth of Nations.

This definition was incorporated into British law in 1931 as the Statute of Westminster. It was adopted immediately in Canada, the Irish Free State, Newfoundland (which joined Canada in 1949) and South Africa. Australia and New Zealand followed. India, Britain's largest colony at the time, became a Dominion at independence in 1947 and remained so until January 1950, when the Indian Republic was born.

The Battle of Waterloo and The Eureka Stockade

On February 26th 1815, barely ten months after the end of the Peninsular War, Napoleon sailed from Elba to bring about the end of his brief period of exile. It was the beginning of the final, momentous chapter of the Napoleonic Wars that would culminate in the great battle of Waterloo and Napoleon's final downfall.

The campaign was also to result in a head to head between the two great commanders of the age, Wellington and Napoleon, two men who had yet to face each other in battle. Napoleon landed in France on March 1st and entered Paris on March 20th. He immediately set to work raising an army, the so-called Army of the North which, by the time of the Waterloo campaign consisted of 125,000 men. Facing Napoleon were the armies of the Seventh Coalition - it had declared Napoleon `an enemy and disturber of the world' - which numbered as many as 800,000 men. But of the various armies opposed to him it would be the Anglo-Dutch army, under Wellington, and Marshal Blucher's Army of the Lower Rhine that would be the object of Napoleon's thrust in June 1815.

The Eureka rebellion, which is often referred to as the 'Eureka Stockade' is a key event in the development of Australian democracy and Australian identity, with some people arguing that ‘Australian democracy was born at Eureka’ (Clive Evatt). In addition, the principles of mateship, seen to be adapted by the gold diggers, and the term ‘digger’ was later adopted by the ANZAC soldiers in World War I.

The rebellion came about because the goldfield workers (known as 'diggers') opposed the government miners' licenses. The licenses were a simple way for the government to tax the diggers. License fees had to be paid regardless of whether a digger's claim resulted in any gold. Less successful diggers found it difficult to pay their license fees.
1854 - The year of the rebellion

In 1854 there were about 25,000 diggers on the Ballarat goldfields. The majority of these were British, especially Irish, but also included Americans, French, Italian, German, Polish and Hungarian exiles as well as many other nationalities. The largest nationality group was Chinese. Aboriginal people were also present on the Ballarat goldfields in many capacities: as Native Police, guides, wives and gold diggers, as well as trading cultural items and food. Women on the gold fields were assisted by Caroline Chisholm.

Law and order on the goldfields was enforced by the Gold Commission's police force which was later reinforced by a garrison of soldiers.

Many designers, ill equipped have been left high and dry on the high tide line. It’s a ruthless industry and piracy is rife.

But there’s always good weather on the way.

For those who are anecdotal-wise, here is one of particular interest, the outcome of an accident that changed the direction of men’s neckwear.

In the late 1940s, a silversmith named Victor Cedarstaff went riding with friends in the Bradshaw Mountains outside Wickenburg, Arizona. When the wind blew his hat off, Cedarstaff removed the hatband, which had a silver buckle he did not want to lose, and put it around his neck.

When his friends complemented him on the new apparel, Cedarstaff returned home, and wove a leather string. He added silver balls to the ends and ran it through a turquoise buckle.

Cedarstaff later patented the new neckwear, which was called the bolo because it resembled the lengths of rope used by Argentine gauchos to catch game or cattle.

Now mass-produced, bolos are usually made of leather cord, with a silver or turquoise buckle. They are common throughout the west and are often worn for business. In 1971 Arizona legislature named the bolo the official state neckwear.

Twenty years before the advent of the Bolo, another innovation took shape, when a pioneering Paris fashion designer, Jean Patou, invented the designer silk ties. He made silk ties from women's clothing material including patterns inspired by the latest art movements of the day, Cubism and Art Deco.

To a puritan, known, to a novice fascinating, to an aspiring designer essential knowledge, because fashion is based on historic events that helped shape the world. It is underpinned by the formation of style.

Definitive styles, without dropping names, are pretty thin on the ground. The dark suit is one that has been around for centuries and since the 20’s has changed little other than a few cosmetic alterations. Louisa Taylor and Pei-Nap Mok is the award winning design team behind the current LBB London cufflink collection.

Traditionally recognised for its strong & distinctive enamel designs, LBB’s current collection has expanded to use new & unusual materials for both its classic & contemporary cufflinks with matching accessories.

There’s a sense of precision in Lbb London cufflinks. That, perhaps significant technology lay behind the hands at work creating masters and models.

Toye, Kenning & Spencer Ltd is a group of manufacturing companies founded in 1685, with a reputation for high quality craftsmanship and service. The Group, who have an experienced in house design team, were working on a new collection for the re launch of their retail brand LBB London. Keen to further develop concept designs that required complex master models, they approached the JIIC to assist in the 3D CAD modelling and to access the centres RP facilities and expertise.

The initial brief was to provide TKS with access to new technology in order to help implement their new product development plan for a range of cufflinks. The JIIC team assisted with CAD/CAM and RP and were able to provide the company with prototype and master models within a short timescale. This meant the product development time was shortened, speeding up the lead time to market and creating a longer buying period for their range cufflinks

Results

The assistance helped the company to ‘realise’ new designs which might not have been possible with internal model making skills

o The assistance helped the company to research and to test the market with new product

o The product development lead time was reduced

o Higher sales figures were generated as a direct result of new design reaching the market at the desired time

o The assistance demonstrated the use of RP technologies to other parts of the business and provided them with the opportunity to assess potential applications of new technology for the future.

A sound relationship has been developed with the Group and the JIIC is now working with the company to conduct a feasibility study into the use of laser welding for bespoke precious and base metal jewellery and medals, and the use of lasers for production methods, within their factories.
